ABOUT THE NERVIA MOVEMENT
ABOUT THE NERVIA MOVEMENT
The Nervia group, founded at the instigation of Mr. Léon Eeckman and the painters Anto Carte and Louis Buisseret in 1928, is an artistic circle that aims, through its support for young quality Hainaut artists, to promote Walloon art, which has been blurred by the Flemish expressionism of Sint-Martens-Latem.
In addition to Anto Carte and Louis Buisseret, this Nervia movement included seven other painters: Frans Depooter, Léon Devos, Léon Navez, Pierre Paulus, Rodolphe Strebelle, Taf Wallet and Jean Winance.
Their art is Latin in essence, more realistic, more lyrical and more intimate than that of their northern neighbours; they have obvious technical qualities, refuse to be avant-garde at all costs, have studied other artists extensively and express a form of neo-humanism through subjects taken from daily and family life, treated with harmony and idealism.
