STREBELLE RODOLPHE

(22 juin 1880, Tournai - Uccle, 9 mai 1959)

Rodolphe Strebelle was a painter, watercolourist and xylographer.
Born in Tournai on 22 June 1880, he left his hometown for Brussels at the age of 8.
He attended the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Schaerbeek and then the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.
Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels (classes of Richir and Delville, as well as Anto Carte).
From 1922, he taught decorative composition at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, where he remained for 27 years.
From 1937, he continued to teach at the École de la Cambre as professor of composition and decorative painting.
The portraits he painted of his wife (the young Dutch painter Clara Catharina COCHIUS, known as Poppy) and his children were all intimate works.
He painted many watercolours at the North Sea, in Italy and in France.
In addition to painting, he created many decorative works: tapestry cartoons in which we can see his sensitivity to the flavour of legends and folklore.
("Les Saisons", "Le Doudou de Mons", "La Meuse", "Le 21 Juillet au Bois de la Cambre", etc.) and cartoons for stained glass windows in which he sought to renew sacred art (Marcinelle church, Royal Chapel, Sacré-Coeur in Uccle, Notre-Dame de la Cambre, etc.).
He also painted the mural "Saint François d'Assise" in the abbey of La Cambre.

He also tried his hand at engraving and illustrating books, like Léon Navez.
In particular for "Le Voleur d'Étincelles" by Maurice Carême.
The simple, harmonious forms and the serene, nuanced colouring of his paintings and watercolours are present in all these works, which are in perfect harmony with his entire oeuvre.
He died on 9 May 1959 in Uccle.
