Nervia - Painters of the 1930s

28 June - 17 November 2002

In 1928, Anto-Carte and Louis Buisseret and an insurance friend Léon Eeckman (the group's stage manager and secretary) created Nervia. The name refers to the Nerviens, the Gallic tribe opposed to Caesar that we read about in our school textbooks.

We wanted to help young painters," wrote Nervia in its early days, "whose work we had observed with great interest - Léon Navez, Taf Wallet, Frans Depooter and Jean Winance. We were helped in this by our friends Paulus and Strebelle. For these young people, Nervia was a shortcut to fame. Nervia wanted to make the presence of Walloon art 'manifest' on the national and international scene.
